Kojic Acid for Dark Underarms, Knees and Bikini Line

A jar of Veliena Brightening Cleansing Pads on a bathroom counter in natural light

Short answer: yes — the same jar, the same routine, no separate product needed. Underarms, bikini line, knees, elbows. If a brightening pad works on the face, there is no reason it stops working below the neck.

But body skin is not face skin, and there are three things worth knowing before you start.

Why body areas behave differently

The skin is often thicker. Knees and elbows in particular have tougher surface skin, which is why they can look ashy and why they often take longer to respond than a mark on your cheek.

These areas take constant friction. Underarms rub. Bikini line rubs. Knees press against the floor and against each other. Friction is one of the most common reasons skin in those places darkens in the first place.

They get shaved and waxed. Repeated hair removal irritates skin, and irritated skin very often responds by producing more pigment.

That third point matters more than most articles admit, so let us be direct about it.

The honest part: a pad cannot outrun an ongoing cause

If your underarms are darker because of friction, a reaction to a deodorant, or the aftermath of a razor, then a brightening step can work on how the existing darkness looks — but the cause keeps producing new pigment underneath.

You will get a much better result if you change the cause at the same time. That usually means one or more of:

  • A gentler hair-removal method, or more time between sessions
  • A different deodorant, if you suspect the one you use stings or itches
  • Looser clothing on the areas that rub
  • Not scrubbing. Aggressive exfoliation on already-irritated skin is what causes the problem you are trying to fix.

Nobody selling a brightening product wants to write that paragraph. But if you skip it, you spend six weeks wondering why the product “isn’t working” when the razor is undoing it every three days.

The routine, for body

It is the same as the face, and it is short:

  1. Wet the area. Warm water, not hot.
  2. Lift one pad with the tweezers — never fingers in the jar.
  3. Wipe gently in circular motions. No pressing, no scrubbing. The pad texture does the work, not the pressure.
  4. Rinse with warm water, then moisturise.

Twice daily is the standard. On body areas, starting once a day for the first week is sensible — especially anywhere that gets shaved.

Freshly shaved or waxed? Wait.

Give it a full day. Any brightening active on just-shaved skin stings, and there is nothing to gain from rushing it. Shave in the evening, resume the next evening.

How fast you will go through a jar

Worth planning for. A 60-pad jar is about a month on the face alone at twice daily.

Face only, twice daily about a month
Face once daily about two months
Face plus two body areas noticeably faster — plan for it

One pad covers a full area, so you are not using a fresh pad per armpit. But if you are doing face, underarms and knees every day, you will move through a jar faster than someone using it on their cheeks alone.

Sunscreen still applies — to the parts that see sun

Knees and elbows are exposed constantly in summer. If you are working on them, they need broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher the same as your face, or daytime sun undoes the fading as fast as you achieve it.

Underarms and bikini line are usually covered, so this matters less there. Use judgement rather than a rule.

How long it takes

Around four to six weeks of consistent use for visible fading, the same as the face — and often a little longer on knees and elbows, because the skin there is thicker.

Here is the full timeline and the four things that decide how fast you get there.

What is normal, and what is not

Normal: a warm or tingling feeling for a few seconds after wiping. A temporary golden tint on light towels, because the formula contains real turmeric — use a darker cloth.

Not normal, on body skin especially:

  • Stinging that does not settle within a minute or two
  • Redness still present the next day
  • Any raw or broken feeling on skin that was recently shaved

If any of that happens, stop, moisturise plainly for a few days, and restart at once a day — and leave more time after hair removal. If it continues, stop using the product and speak to a qualified professional.

The short version

  1. Yes — underarms, bikini line, knees and elbows, from the same jar.
  2. Wet, wipe gently, rinse. Exactly the face routine.
  3. Wait a full day after shaving or waxing.
  4. If friction, a razor or a deodorant is the ongoing cause, change that too — otherwise you are fading and re-making at the same time.
  5. Knees and elbows need sunscreen if they see daylight.
  6. Four to six weeks, sometimes longer on thicker skin. Plan on going through a jar faster.
